Is Vitamix a trustworthy brand?
The first thing most folks out there consider when it comes time to purchase an appliance is the brand name. With such a big variety of different makes to pick from, how do you know what is and what isn’t reliable? To help you decide if a Vitamix model is something you can trust enough to spend your hard earned dollars on, we will give you a very quick rundown of the company history. If this doesn’t interest you then you can skip right onto the product section directly below this.
Vitamix was founded in the very early 1940s by William Grover Barnard. Having worked as a salesman from 1921 selling food and nutritional products all over America, he was blown away when a friend first showed him an early blender model in 1937. He was amazed by how easy it was to create nutritious meals with this unit and immediately started promoting it as part of this product arsenal, but could see there were many ways that this particular machine could be improved upon. Having spent the next few years working on his own prototype blender, he hand built his own office in the early 1940s and began to market his blender. Over the next couple of years his business took off, and he turned from full time salesman to a company manager and product developer. Looking to expand his business further, Mr Barnard turned his attention to the latest and greatest advertising ventures – the television. He is widely credited as the man who created the infomercial, and interest in the product peaked even more thanks to this television advertising. In 1955 the business was passed down to his son Bill Barnard, and the name of the company was changed to Vitamix corporation in 1964 when his other son Grover Barnard joined the company. In 1969 they released one of their landmark products, the Vitamix 3600. This model was truly the most versatile blender ever created, and some of the features included being able to knead bread dough, blend ice cream, grind grain, and even make hot soup!
In 1985 they developed another world first – the first commercial blender know as the Mix’n Machine. This machine was designed for heavyweight duties, and some of its later models can be found today in many factories and restaurants around the world. Today Vitamix is still going strong, and continues to innovate and refine various blender related products. They are a true American success story, and the company is now run by the great grandson of William Grover Barnard, Mr Jodi Berg.
Recommended model – Vitamix 5200
As mentioned earlier Costco do sell a number of different models, but without a doubt the Vitamix 5200 is one of the most sought after models. With a RRP of around $450 you may think this is a bit much to spend on a blender, but it all depends what your intended usage will be. This is a very popular model at Costco, and is often seen at the sale price of $399. So what features does the Vitamix 5200 come with?
It has the ability to heat, churn, grind, blend and chop which is quite something considering it can all be done from one machine! This means for example you could create a smoothie with ease, make some ice cream on a sunny day, or even some nice hot soup on a colder day! The unit is powered by a two horsepower motor which doesn’t sound like much, but it is more than capable of making the finest smoothie you will ever taste. It also comes with what is called a Tamper. The Tamper allows the machine to blend much thicker liquids that most blenders simply could not handle.
Cleaning a blender has always been a chore up until now, but the Vitamix 5200 changes the game altogether. All you need to do to clean the unit is to add a drop of dish soap and some warm water, then you run the blender on high for 30 seconds. Once that is done you can empty the container and leave it to dry. The handle of the unit is soft and ergonomically designed for extended comfortable usage. The blades are laser cut, and are made of hardened stainless steel to ensure mainly years of hassle free usage.
In terms of safety features, the Vitamix 5200 comes with a thermal power cut-off unit which means the machine automatically shuts off if it reaches a certain temperature to avoid any fires. The base of the machine is also made from fire retardant ABS plastic for further protection.
In terms of the warranty, this Vitamix model comes with a 7 year warranty which is a testament to how good this blender actually is. On top of this if you currently own a Vitamix blender, you can trade in your old one and get a special upgrade price on a shiny new unit!
Included with the unit is a getting started DVD and booklet which covers all the basics of operating the unit, and in addition you get The Whole Foods cookbook. This is a fully illustrated color hard-back book which contains hundreds of recipes, so you will never run out of uses for your blender!
As you can see this blender can handle anything you throw at it, and comes with all the bells and whistles you could possibly need. Backed by an unprecedented 7 year warranty, you can be sure that you are getting the best quality at a very affordable price.
Where is the best place to get one?
Obviously as this article is based around the Vitamix models available in Costco, we would recommend Costco as being where to get one! However if you don’t have a nearby Costco, or if you local Costco is out of stock (which happens frequently during sale periods) then there are several other places where you can get hold of them at decent prices. One such source of good prices is of course Amazon, as they offer most of the Vitamix range for sale. It will also give you a chance to compare prices against Costco to make sure you are getting the best deal. You can go here to see their full range of Vitamix models, including the 5200.
Remember that Vitamix are one of the top blenders so you can be sure that you are getting a great blender that will provide many years of outstanding service!
