Today we are going to be looking at Turkish coffee grinders. These machines have been made for over 300 years, and are the best way to make authentic Turkish coffee. Turkish coffee is very different to what we drink in America, and is definitely something everyone should try at at some point! To start with we are going to be talking about Turkish coffee, what it is, and how you can make it. What exactly is Turkish coffee, and how do you make it?
Lets talk about Turkish coffee for a minute. Many of you may have heard about Turkish coffee, or might be curious to try some after hearing about it. Turkish coffee is very different to the coffee we normally drink, as it is made with a very fine grade of coffee. Note that Turkish coffee simply refers to how it is prepared, there isn’t any kind of different coffee bean used!
There are differing ways to make Turkish coffee, but all of them follow a rather basic pattern. First, the coffee is ground up as finely as possible. This is accomplished using a Turkish coffee grinder, as pictured above. There are one or two electric grinders that produce a fine enough grade of coffee to use, and we will look at one of these a bit further down the page.
Once you have your finely ground coffee ready, put some water in your cooking pot, and leave it on a medium heat. Once the water has warmed up a little, you add your coffee. After this you can add a little sugar if you want, however do not stir the mixture until the water is warm enough to dissolve the sugar. At the point it dissolves the sugar, you need to start stirring the mixture, and after you have stirred it a few times, you should turn the heat to a low setting and allow the mixture to start foaming. Once you start to see a small ring on bubbles on the top, then you are on the right track. You should turn down the heat even more to this point – remember to not let the mixture boil as this could ruin the entire batch of coffee! Try to keep the temperature consistent, so that the foam stays on top as long as possible. To help it keep foaming, you can stir it very gently to try to encourage this. If you find the foam rising too much, then turn down the temperature and allow it to cool briefly. Some people actually suggest you do this to get the most out of the coffee flavor.
Generally, when the foam gets darker in texture, this is when you know the drink is ready. Pour the foam into each cup first, and then the liquid afterwards. You now have some delicious Turkish coffee to enjoy!

What kind of grinder do I need to make this kind of coffee?
Traditionally, Turkish coffee has been made using a brass grinder, as seen at the top of the page. These have a long and interesting history, and are still made today for the purpose of making coffee. These are specially made grinders which are also used to grind peppers, and are otherwise know as pepper mills. They are adjustable, but the adjustment isn’t very noticeable, and tends to make a fine and a superfine grade of coffee or pepper. These mostly cost in the range of $50, though you should expect to pay more for a larger model. Most of them come in a 8″ or 9″ size.
These are the only way you can grind the coffee to the required size. Some modern day day electric grinders will grind coffee to the required fineness, although this is somewhat rare. This is an easier way to get your coffee, however it is quite a rare feature to see on most modern machines.
